Poisson's ratio (ν) is the negative ratio of transverse strain to axial strain when a material is stretched or compressed. Most materials have values between 0.0 and 0.5 — rubber approaches 0.5, while typical solids fall in the range 0.2–0.3. Named after Siméon Poisson.
